Let's talk salty foods.
Extra salt is often recommended for those with POTS to increase blood volume, which is low in many with POTS. Higher levels of salt combined with an increase in fluids, of course.
Most people that know anything about POTS might know this to be the main thing: extra salt and water.
Finding salt in our modern diets is not one of the most difficult things. Walk into any grocery store and a full aisle of jerky, pretzels, potato chips, and frozen and processed foods awaits you. Potato chips are not only salty but their crunch and flavor are so addictive.
And yes, although these foods are high in sodium, which is what POTSies need, these foods can contribute to fatigue and other symptoms. So then we're in a vicious cycle, thinking we need more salt while loading up with foods that might make us feel worse.
One of the reasons these foods can make us feel unwell is because of inflammation. For example, potato chips are made with refined oils and processed carbohydrates, both of which are highly inflammatory. This can lead to inflammation in the body, as well as, pain, brain fog, fatigue, and weight gain.
Snacks like these are also high in fat and have little nutritional value. So they’re empty calories. They keep you full, which minimizes the chances of you eating other nutritious foods. And also, in the process of frying them, the potatoes lose much of their beneficial nutrients and antioxidants. This process also creates byproducts that are harmful to your health.
Of course, it's never black and white. Once in a while, these kinds of salty foods are okay. It's when they become part of your weekly diet that it can become more problematic. So, what are some options for other salty snacks that still satisfy the need for a crunch? See image carousel below.
